Inspiring Olympian Training Session
On Friday, Year 9 students welcomed GBs Commonwealth and European gold medallist boxer, Delicious Orie. Sheffield based Orie had recently returned from training in the USA before travelling to North Bromsgrove. Students had some Q and A time followed by a training session with the 6’6” super heavyweight athlete. They practiced different boxing combinations with Orie who was joined by local Self Defence instructor Pete Martin. Students will continue their sessions with Pete in the upcoming weeks at his new Self Defence Unit in Redditch. Meanwhile Orie returns to a gruelling training schedule in preparation for the Paris Olympics. We wish him all the best!
Orie said “It was an absolute pleasure to work with some of the year 9’s for the Boys Move Programme. An excellent opportunity to see some great potential and even more importantly some great motivation. I look forward to seeing how these remarkable young lads get on with their sessions in Pete’s very capable hands. I can’t wait to hear all about it in September! A massive thank you to North Bromsgrove for having me and to Mrs Brierley for being the driving force for all of it.”
Self-defence instructor Pete said “Positive experiences at an early age help build the foundations for an active life. If children and young people have experiences that feel fun and give them a sense of confidence, they’re more likely to want to be active in the future. Events like this are fantastic for engaging and inspiring young people.”
Year 11 student Bailey Magee also took part in the session. As 2023 England boxing national development champion, Magee enjoyed showcasing his skills to his fellow North students and role model Orie. Bailey added “It was so great to meet Orie and hear all about his career path as it’s my dream to becoming a world boxing champion. It’s inspiring to hear how he’s aiming to turn pro after the Olympics.”
