Maths Challenge
Twelve A-Level Maths students at North Bromsgrove High School participated in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. The aim of this national Maths competition is to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.
The challenge consists of 25 multiple choice problems, and these problems are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, with knowledge based on both GCSE and A Level Mathematics knowledge, yet it also challenges those with more experience. Pupils are only given plain/lined paper and no calculators were allowed throughout the 90-minute paper-based challenge.
The students faced tough competition as they compete against schools across the UK and around the world. Gold certificates are awarded to the top 10% of participants, silver goes to the next top 20% and bronze goes to the next top 30%. The Maths department are pleased to announce that in our first year of entry, we have one silver and four bronze certificates.
Congratulations go to all participants, with special recognition to Ethan Jones who achieved Silver and Best in School, and Ben Harvey, Joseph Barnes, Ben Smith, and Adam James who all achieved Bronze. These certificates will go well with their CVs and their plans for their next step ahead, whether it is university or job for the future.
In early February 2021, we will be inviting students from the top groups of Years 9 and 10 who will participate in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. We, at North Bromsgrove, are looking forward to seeing more success for the future!
