NBHS Maths dept leading return of local Maths Teacher Network
The afternoon of Friday July 1, was a key moment for the Maths department at North Bromsgrove High School as it hosted over 20 Maths teachers and leaders from schools around the Bromsgrove area, Birmingham, the West and East Midlands and Essex.
Hosted by Mr Seager and Mrs Muldowney from the Maths department at North Bromsgrove High School, the Maths department hosted on behalf of Pearson Edexcel exam board and relaunched the local Maths Teacher Network meetings for the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The key speaker was Steve Wren, Ofsted’s subject lead for Mathematics, who provided a refreshing and engaging session on “Engineering mathematical success”. With substantial teaching experience including being the subject lead for various large secondary schools, lecturing on initial teaching programmes, and being a former county consultant, Steve provided many points of a Maths department running effectively.
Many points were noted, discussed, and debated throughout the two-hour training session. These included topics such as the Maths curriculum, the sequencing of lessons, agreed approaches to teaching different topics, how pupils should practise their Maths skills, and how to create assessments that are fit for purpose.
The session was well-received by all the teachers and has led the way for future communications between different schools including North Bromsgrove High School. It certainly had a “conference” feel where teachers from the different schools shared their experiences of good teaching practice and how it works in their context.
Mr Man was one that enjoyed the Maths Teacher Network meeting as it enabled him to get in contact with teachers that he had trained with previously, notably the TAM (Teaching Advanced Mathematics) course several years ago. He was able to network and share his experiences with colleagues from different schools including Mrs Wragg (Northampton School for Girls), Mr Madajcayk (Ormiston Rivers Academy, Essex) and Miss Buckley (Dame Elizabeth Cadbury School, Birmingham).
