Poetry Comp

It was a privilege to listen to a selection of poetry performed by a wonderful group of year 9 students on Wednesday. Year 9 have been entered for a national young writers’ competition as part of their enrichment opportunities in English and 20 of these entries caught our eye.  With the assignment to craft a piece of poetry about ‘the bricks that built me’, Miss Sheppard and Miss Powell were particularly impressed by the various literary techniques used to describe each individual’s identity.  The 20 students selected to perform their poems included extended metaphors, anaphoric repetition, and alternating rhyming couples in their writing.  Isla M, who won the overall English House Competition, curated a poem of thanks to those who have inspired her throughout her life.  Bella L personified fear, which can consume, and take over life, much like it took over this identity poem.  Ben C and Oli B performed their poetry with eloquence and confidence. Oli B took home the prize for the most engaging performance: he took to the microphone like a natural and his expressive tone was unmatched by any other!

The English faculty sends huge congratulations to the four house competition winners and wishes them success with their entries as we put them forward for publication.
