STEM in action with bridge building

During their Physics lessons, Year 9 students were challenged to research bridge design. With cross-curricular links to maths and engineering, it was a perfect STEM lesson.

They were challenged to build their own bridge, to strict criteria of no shorter than 25cm or taller than 1 metre and no shorter than 50cm in length. This in itself proved a challenge as they had to redesign and problem solve to realise their ideas in action.

Once constructed, the bridges were tested to see if they met the criteria of appearance and size and calculate what mass they could carry before breaking. Most students achieved one or more of the targets. Scarlet's bridge was highly decorated so won the prize for aesthetics, whereas Keira’s team won the strongest bridge.

Well done to our Year 9 physicists!
