Science week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths. In our school, we are fortunate to have specialist staff in all those subject areas who have a passion for delivering their subject. 

Throughout the pandemic, science has played a vital role and provided advice to the government, including through the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), which Sir Patrick Vallance chaired with the Chief Medical Officer, Chris Whitty. The formation of a SAGE is triggered to provide emergency scientific and technical advice to decision-makers in government and includes leading experts from a range of fields depending on the type of emergency. SAGE committees usually meet for a handful of meetings. In this case SAGE has met over 100 times and involved clinicians, epidemiologists, modellers, virologists, immunologists, behavioural scientists, public health doctors, and experts in therapeutics and vaccines, amongst others.

Science has been key to formulating vaccines and saving lives. As a school, our science week has celebrated what a fantastic and varied subject it is to be involved with learning and taking into post 16 studies and beyond.

The fun began with our House Quiz for Years 9 and 10 to celebrate British Science Week (11-20 March). Over 45 of our students across the year groups took part with Rowling House victorious in Year 9 and Churchill in Year 10. Students were very competitive and really impressed the staff with their amazing facts and knowledge. Mrs Bridges is busy thinking up funny science jokes for next year!
