Students are flexing their mussels in Food

Students are 'flexing their mussels' in Food!

We have been awarded the opportunity to prepare, cook and eat fresh Cornish mussels by The Food Teachers Centre Fish Hero programme. The ‘Fish Heroes’ campaign aims to ensure that every child gets a chance to prepare, cook and eat fish before they leave school. Being awarded this privilege has allowed their students the chance to eat mussels that they have freshly prepared, for the very first time.

The students studying the popular GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition course spent the day preparing and tasting the fresh Cornish mussels and made a dish called ‘Angry Mussels’; one of Jamie Oliver’s recipes which included chilli, garlic, tomatoes and fresh rosemary grown on the school site. In addition, they have studied how mussels are grown, harvested, processed and how they are a sustainable, seasonal and nutritious food which all supports their learning at GCSE level.

Mrs O’Grady, the school’s Head of Department for the subject said; ‘This has been a fantastic opportunity for students, and we know that many will continue their passion for learning about food in the sixth form studying Level 3 in Food Science and Nutrition starting in September 2022. Who knows, the next Jamie Oliver may come from Bromsgrove!’
