Teaching and Learning

We understand that learning is our core function and as part of our continued drive to improve the standards of learning, we have 4 words linking teaching and learning to our  CARE values, Connect, Adapt, Respond and Engage. All staff and students enhance their teaching and learning by using these words to think differently about what they do both in and out of the classroom.

Connect – Students are expected to think carefully about how they connect with the learning that takes place. We focus on what the Big Question of the lesson is and how it is helping them to develop.  We also ask them, are you on time and ready to learn in every lesson? What do you need to do to ensure you are successful? Are you catching up with any lost learning if you are absent for a day? Are you actively taking part in the learning process?

Adapt – Students learn that adapting to the feedback of staff or their peers and thinking about learning in a unique way are crucial life skills. We ask them, what do you need to do to improve? Have you asked someone if you are unsure of what to do next? If you are not developing the skills yet, what do you need to do differently?  How are you adapting to more independent ways of learning (as you approach or join our Sixth Form)?

Respond – This is crucial and where some of the deeper learning truly takes place. Students need to consider how they respond to the feedback given by staff. We ask them, why haven’t you quite got this point yet? What can you do to revisit or revise it? How are you going to apply the feedback that Sir/Miss has given you? Was this class work / homework good enough? Are you listening carefully to the opinions of others and giving your own in a suitable way?

Engage – Every class, every lesson, every day. A simple mantra that students and staff are adopting to ensure maximum input and therefore maximum output. Consequently, in relation to this we are ask them, have you applied yourself fully to your learning? Have you worked as hard as you could? Are you doing enough independently to be successful? How are you engaging with learning and the wider school community beyond the classroom?

It is an absolute pleasure to visit students in their lessons and to see them engaged, equipped, and focused on achieving their true potential and students are rightly proud to show their work to Senior Leaders as they have attended lessons. Alongside these values, we have Learning Legends – recognising talented learners as we attend lessons.  We hope all students will be able to achieve this recognition across the year.
